For the condition of dry mouth

1) What causes dry mouth?

You get a dry mouth when you have a reduced flow of saliva from your salivary glands.

There are many possible causes of a reduced salivary flow. At one extreme the salivary glands may themselves be diseased or may be wholly or partially removed during head and neck surgery. Many common drugs and medical treatments have the side-effect of causing a dry mouth. Our salivary flow is naturally reduced when we are sleeping and if we sleep with our mouth open then it may start to feel dry and uncomfortable. The amount of saliva we produce also tends to get less as we get older, and dry mouth is a common problem in the ageing population.

2) Why does dry mouth lead to accelerated tooth decay?

Saliva is a key part of the protection and repair mechanism for our teeth.

Each day some of the calcium phosphate in our teeth is dissolved by acids in our mouth. These acids can come from acidic foods such as citrus fruits, vinegar, pickles, wine and carbonated soft drinks as well as from plaque acids produced after the consumption of sugars and carbohydrates. This process of demineralization is balanced by a natural remineralization process in which saliva carries calcium phosphate (produced from the foods we eat) back to the surface of the teeth where it replaces the lost minerals and keeps our teeth in a strong, healthy, white condition.

When we lose our saliva, we lose this natural protective and repair mechanism.

Dentacal Mouth Moistener not only moistens the mouth, but it also contains a source of truly bio-available calcium phosphate and is thus also able to help compensate for the loss of the natural salivary repair mechanism.
